As I come up on my fourth month living in Miami, I’ve been reflecting on the ways I’ve grown and the things I’ve learned since saying goodbye to the Big Apple. This new city is everything I dreamed of and more and has pushed me to do things I never expected to. In the grand scheme of things, four months equates to about four seconds, and I already feel like I’ve discovered so much about myself and the world around me. This excites me for not only the experiences to come, but for endless wealth of knowledge that lies ahead. So far, these are my favorite things moving to a new city has taught me:
1. There are lessons you can’t learn until you leave your comfort zone.
Putting yourself out there is fun! Whether it be introducing yourself to a stranger in a coffee shop or picking up and moving to a new city, putting yourself out there forces you to step out of your comfort zone. Leaving my comfort zone helps me to think ‘what is the best thing that can happen’ instead of ‘what is the worst’. I’ve come to realize that focusing on what the positive outcome of trying something new could bring instead of the negative makes it a whole lot easier – and is usually far more accurate to what really unfolds.
2. Being alone is so much more enjoyable than it sounds.
Prior to moving, having alone time wasn’t my preference. For most hours of my day, I was surrounded by either a family member, college roommate or friend. Alone time seemed not only boring, but daunting. Now it is one of my favorite things; it is the most peaceful part of my day. I especially enjoy going for walks, window shopping at clothing stores around town and taking myself out to new restaurants when I’m by myself.
3. Home is Never That Far Away.
I’d be thrilled to be with my loved ones back home every day, but that’s simply not the case. When it comes to missing friends and family, I’ve learned to focus on the bright side – maybe I can’t be with them for everything, but I’m able to be there for all the big things! This weekend I’m heading back to New York for my brother’s graduation, and to be there to support those who have supported me throughout my move brings me so much joy.
