TV Shows For When the News is Too Much

On the heels of a truly horrible year, my standards for 2021 were already pretty low – all I was really asking for of the new year was to simply not be a completely traumatic experience. Unfortunately, it took six whole days for 2021 to show us that she’s just 2020 with bangs. New year, same “living through an unprecedented historical event once a week” experience.

Watching footage of domestic terrorists storming the capital in an effort to overturn our democracy was not exactly how I’d been hoping to kick off 2021. While watching the news and staying informed is super important, it can also be unsettling and upsetting watching such unimaginable events. When the news gets to be too much, I highly encourage you to give your brain a break and turn on something lighthearted guaranteed to make you feel a bit better, even if it’s just for an hour or two.

Here are some of my go-to’s:

  • The Real Housewives (note: if you’re new to the series, start with the New York, Beverly Hills or Potomac franchises)
  • Schitt’s Creek
  • Parks and Recreation
  • Arrested Development
  • Vanderpump Rules
  • Emily in Paris
  • Bridgerton
  • The Good Place
  • The Great British Baking Show
