Tips for Training a Puppy

If you know Fish, you know that most of our team either has puppies and dogs or loves to be around them. As a new Golden Retriever mom, I’ve been consistently researching and reading up on the best ways to train a puppy, and while it’s a challenging experience, it’s also been very rewarding. Here are some tips that I’ve learned along the way.

  1. Start Early: Begin training your puppy as soon as you bring them home. Early socialization and training are crucial for building a well-behaved adult dog.
  1. Positive Reinforcement: Use positive reinforcement techniques like praise and toys to reward good behavior.
  1. Consistency is Key: Maintain a consistent training routine. Use the same commands and rewards so your puppy can easily understand what’s expected.
  1. Basic Commands: Teach essential commands such as sit, stay, come, and heel. These commands provide the foundation for more advanced training.
  1. Crate Training: Introduce your puppy to a crate early on. Crate training can help with potty training and provides a safe space for them
  1. Positive Social Interactions: Encourage positive interactions with other dogs and people. Well-socialized dogs are generally more relaxed and friendly.
  1. Housebreaking: Be patient when housebreaking your puppy. Stick to a consistent schedule for meals and bathroom breaks and reward them for going outside.
  1. Be Patient: Remember that puppies are learning, and mistakes will happen.
  1. Practice Regularly: Training should be an ongoing process.
  1. Supervise and Puppy-Proof: Keep a close eye on your puppy and proof your home to prevent accidents and destructive behavior.

Remember that every puppy is unique, and the training process may vary. Patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement are your best allies in raising a well-behaved and happy pup.
