Tips for Beating Hump Day

I’m writing this blog post on a Wednesday night. Like most Wednesdays, I came home from work tonight feeling completely burnt out, exhausted, and counting down how many hours away Friday is. As I plopped on my couch wondering how I was going to get through the rest of the week, I couldn’t help but wonder (channeling Carrie Bradshaw here) – how do other people tackle the hump day slump? Naturally, I took to Google to find the answer to my question, and found a slew of great tips to beat the midweek struggle and head into the rest of the week refreshed.

Through my extensive research, I’ve determined five of the best ways to beat hump day once and for all.

  1. Plan something fun. I usually try to squeeze all of my fun activities into the weekend (which is probably why my weekends are rarely relaxing). However, giving yourself something to look forward to can be a great way to maintain enthusiasm throughout the week. Make Wednesdays your designated evening to grab dinner with an old friend.
  2. Dress for Success. We’re lucky at Fish that we’re encouraged to wear whatever we feel most comfortable in. That means most days, I roll into work rocking my comfiest lululemons. However, wearing an outfit that makes you feel good can do wonders for your mood. When you feel great, you can tackle anything – even hump day.
  3. The irony of exercise is that even when you go into a workout feeling exhausted and like it’s the last thing in the world you want to do, you typically end up leaving feeling totally refreshed. When the midweek slump hits you hard, force yourself to do whatever exercise you prefer – for me, it’s Orangetheory Fitness, and I’m totally not skipping my Wednesday class ever again.
  4. It’s so easy to get home and continue checking your email and taking care of “just one more thing” for work (which for me, always turns into working for hours). If you don’t give your brain a break, it’s going to be impossible to finish the week strong.
  5. Move your Weekend Cheat Day to Wednesday. Most people use the weekend to indulge, but if you have one designated cheat day, move it to Wednesday instead of Friday or Saturday. When you do your Sunday grocery shopping, get all the ingredients to make a delicious meal for yourself on Wednesday. You’ll have something to look forward to, and you’ll feel accomplished after whipping up a great meal that you genuinely enjoy.
