The Worst 2019 Golden Globe Snubs

This past Sunday, the 2019 Golden Globes took place. Like every year, countless talented actors and cinematic masterpieces were snubbed, leaving fans everywhere wondering what the heck the Hollywood Foreign Press was thinking when they selected their award recipients. While it’s true that the TV and film industries are producing more quality content then ever before (it’s seriously impossible to stay up to date on all the great shows available), nonetheless this year there were some serious oversights. Here’s a few of my favorite films and TV shows that were unfairly snubbed and deserved far greater recognition than they garnered.

  • Black Panther. No offense to Bohemian Rhapsody, but Black Panther was a cultural phenomenon that deserved to take home the Best Picture award. The Marvel film was groundbreaking for representation of people of color on the big screen, with a stacked cast including Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Letitia Wright, Sterling Brown, and Forest Whitaker, among others. The meme to the right summarizes entirely my reaction when this amazing film didn’t get the recognition it deserved. #WakandaForever
  • A Star is Born. Sure, the film did win best original song for the iconic bop that is “Shallow” (if it didn’t there’d probably be riots in the street), but it failed to take home any other major awards. I saw this movie three times in theaters, and each time I was moved to tears by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s performances. Hopefully the Oscars do better.
  • Crazy Rich Asians. Much like Black Panther, Crazy Rich Asians garnered a ton of critical acclaim not only because it’s a fantastic movie, but also because of its inclusive cast. It seems crazy that casting Asians to play Asian characters is somehow a new concept for Hollywood, and even crazier that studios are only just now realizing that they can make a ton of money by making movies with people who look like our diverse country. It deserved far more love than it received.
  • Amy Adams. Sharp Objects was one of the best shows of 2018, primarily due to the incredible performance Adams gave. My jaw actually dropped when she was snubbed. The Hollywood Foreign Press voters desperately need to get some taste by 2020 and not repeat these same mistakes.
