The Pros & Cons of The Holiday Season

Yup, we’re officially in December and the holiday season has kicked off! October and November are a thing of the past and it’s 100% acceptable to now switch out your pumpkins and fall décor for stockings, wreaths and garlands. Not going to lie, this is one of my favorite times of year. From decorating my home with warm Christmas lights to trying out new holiday-ish recipes, this last month of the year is completely different from the rest. However, while we all prepare (both mentally + physically) for this busy season, many of us are both excited and not so much about this month and here’s why.

Pros

  • Takes our mind off everything else. We’ve all gone through a lot in the recent months and while we can’t wait to move on to the next year (please be good to us 2021), we still have December to get through. However, this time of year lets us escape our everyday lives and focus on something else that’s not COVID-19-related, like what side dish we’ll whip up for Christmas and the perfect holiday gifts to say thanks to those that helped us get through this year.
  • Our homes become a winter wonderland. While many of you are preparing for harsh winter temperatures, here in Florida we don’t really get much of that. That’s why, the holidays are a special time where we get to pull out fake snowflakes, snowed Christmas trees and pretend that we live somewhere that actually feels like Christmas morning.
  • PTO. Here at Fish, we’re blessed to have several days off work to spend with our family and friends instead. We’ve worked hard (harder than ever this year) and no matter how many PTO we took off in the year, it doesn’t seem like it’s enough. That’s why, those extra days we get off are much, much needed and really help us decompress before we start it all again in January.

Cons

  • Daylight saving time ended and we’re all feeling off. Once again, we’ve made that one-hour change and are now faced with brighter mornings and darker evenings. Our moods are off and it seems like no matter how hard we try, the days are just too short for us to get everything done like we had planned.
  • You’re rushing to finish it all. Whether it’s buying a gift for everyone on your list or checking off everything on your to-do list for work, the next several weeks truly feel like they just fly by. We also tend to want to finish anything and everything we had planned to do in the year, so that we can start with a fresh, clean slate once the new year kicks off.
