It’s been a year. I’m going to speak for everyone when I say that we’re pretty exhausted. From virtual school and adjusting to a new work from home life, to a crazy election and oh yea, we’re in the middle of a pandemic, things have been a little…much. But even though 2020 has put us through the wringer, there are still things to be thankful for. And if you have something to be thankful for, you certainly have an opportunity to pay it forward. Which is why this Thanksgiving, more so than any other, it’s so important to not only give thanks, but to give.
I’m not saying you need to give a hefty donation to a nonprofit in order to make an impact (although by all means if you can, please do!), but if you’re stumped for ways you and/or your business can contribute to the greater good this holiday season, consider some of the below suggestions.
In-Kind Donations
Whether it’s a complimentary service or opening up the doors to your restaurant for a fundraiser, this is an easy way for small businesses to give back to the community that’s supported them for so many years.
Offer Donation Matching
Gather your team and select a local organization that could use some extra TLC and offer to match all monetary donations. You can cap the match up to a certain amount, or let the sky be the limit. The benefits of this idea are two-fold: it builds morale as it rallies your team around a fantastic cause, and it helps a local charity.
Referral Programs
Most companies offer some type of incentive for employee or client referrals. This holiday season, why not add the option of charity? Instead of a monetary referral for an employee, try offering a donation to a non-profit for the same amount in that person’s name.
Shop Small
As a small business owner, you know firsthand the importance of supporting local companies. If you’re searching for a simple yet highly meaningful way to give back to the community, shop small and encourage your team to do the same!
Launch a Mentorship Program
Sometimes the best gift you can give is your time. There’s always someone who has great skills and talents but just needs to get their foot in the door. That’s where you come in. Creating a mentorship program can allow you and your company to donate your time and expertise and provide the tools and guidance someone needs to excel in your industry.
