Ten Simple Choices to help Protect Planet Earth

With Earth Day approaching, we are reminded of the delicate balance that sustains life on our planet. Earth Day, observed annually on April 22nd, serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all living beings and our responsibility to protect and preserve our home. It’s a day not just for celebration, but for reflection, and action!

Banning plastic straws on the beach is a 100% GOOD idea. But will it save the planet? No. Those turtles will be a hell of a lot happier though. I’m a huge fan of happy turtles. However I’m a bigger fan of people paying attention to planet earth.

Let’s face it – we have a lot of work to do. It doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or irreversible, I promise. Start small! Cultivate healthy habits. It’s about creating a sustainable routine that helps mother nature and works for your lifestyle.

Ten Simple Things You Can Do to Help Protect the Earth

  1. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Cut down on what you throw away. Follow the three “R’s” to conserve natural resources and landfill space. If you’re unsure what qualifies as recyclables, take a peek at the helpful infographic below.
  2. Volunteer for cleanups in your community. You can get involved in protecting your local beaches, lakes, rivers, etc.
  3. Educate. When you further your own education, you can help others understand the importance and value of our natural resources.
  4. Conserve water. The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater that eventually end up in the ocean. Try counting when the water is on. Becoming aware of how much water you use is the first step to reducing wasted water.
  5. Choose sustainable. Learn how to make smart seafood choices at fishwatch.gov.
  6. Shop wisely. Buy less plastic and bring reusable shopping bags.
  7. Use long-lasting light bulbs. Energy efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Also flip that light switch off when you leave the room! Or be like me and make Alexa do it.
  8. Plant a tree. Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change.
  9. Don’t send chemicals into our waterways. Choose non-toxic chemicals in the home and office.
  10. Bike more. Drive less.
