Surviving the Holidays (Pandemic Style)

It’s the most wonderful time of the year again! 2020 has been…well, to quote CNN’s Jake Tapper – ”a hot mess inside a dumpster fire inside a train wreck.” With Thanksgiving rounding the corner, I figured now was the opportune time to share my tips for surviving the holidays with your family, although this year may look a little different and some of us may even be able to skip this year’s plans (thanks, COVID).

“People have been saying this is a marathon, not a sprint, it’s a marathon that you didn’t sign up to run, it’s a marathon you got stuck in.” – Dr. Carl Fleisher, head of clinical at online therapy Reflect.

Holidays are stressful enough and to couple it with a global pandemic which has uprooted the way we live life, it’s important to keep our mental health in check this season.

  • Check-in with yourself – are you overwhelmed? If the answer is yes, make sure your taking a few minutes every day to do something for yourself, even something as small as turning your phone off and disconnecting from the world. We all need a break and if the world goes to $h!+ for those few minutes, then so be it.
  • Accept your family for who they are – let your conspiracy theorist cousin continue to think COVID is a hoax and your semi-racist/drunk uncle go on a politically charged rant. Remember, you can always remove yourself from any conversation or simply not engage or surround yourself with anyone who makes you question your sanity. 🙂
  • And if all else fails, wine is always a good idea (or tequila). Cheers to a better year ahead!
