Red: Revisiting Taylor Swift’s Best Work

After years of Taylor Swift simultaneously being one of the most popular yet most underappreciated artists in the music industry, the release of her indie-folk albums Folklore and Evermore finally garnered the recognition she deserves as one of the best songwriters of our generation. Although her two latest albums are masterpieces deserving of the praise they’ve received, Taylor’s discography is significantly stronger than she gets credit for. Luckily, Taylor’s re-recording all of her old albums in an effort to take ownership of her work, making for the perfect opportunity to revisit her music and appreciate her talent.

Out of all of Taylor Swift’s albums, Red is undoubtably her most ground-breaking, experimental and mature work. Tomorrow, November 12th, the re-recording of Red will be released, and although the general public is all too familiar with the singles from that album (including “We Are Never Getting Back Together” and “22”), it’s the non-single tracks on Red that reflect why the album is such a masterpiece.

Red is truly a testament to Swift’s talent and star power. Some consider Red to be her magnum opus of lyricism, long before Folklore and Evermore were even an idea. While her talent and genius was always there, ‘Red’ is the moment that Taylor switches to high gear, launching into a trajectory that only goes up and up, blasting through the boundaries of genre to carve out her current sound. Now no longer needing to be defined by any genre or sound label, Taylor Swift is just Taylor Swift now, all because ‘Red’ allowed her to be.

In honor of the Red (Taylor’s Version) release, here’s a playlist of the album’s best songs that you probably haven’t heard of.
