Packing Tips from a Travel Nut

Planning a vacation anytime soon? I sure hope so! From a simple stay-cation to a trip abroad, there’s no way to avoid the packing process. There are those like my mom, who takes her suitcase out a week early, plans her outfits and already has her toiletries in a ready-to-go bag. Or worse, my husband who packs the morning of the trip (even when we went to Italy!). My anxiety was blazing. Then there’s the rest of us. Below I’ve compiled a list of tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way that every traveler should keep in mind, no matter how short or long the trip.

Create a packing list: This is my favorite tip, obviously it’s first. Trust me, it’s super helpful to create yourself a packing list. Just in the same way that you compile a list of to-do’s for work or a grocery list, a packing checklist can mean the difference between forgetting that essential item and packing that useless one. Pro tip: Look through your list after your trip and make notes. Did you forget something? Did you bring extra items? Note it, save it, use it next time! I utilize the same packing list for all my trips and tweak based on the weather.

Plan ahead: Well, duh. It’s a trip that’s been “planned” but I’m talking specifics. Try to figure out what your itinerary is for that upcoming weekend or week away and plan accordingly. Are you going to a park? Perfect, pack a pair of shorts, a tank top and sandals. Going to the beach the next day? Lovely, toss in a bathing suit, cover-up and oh, you’ve already got the sandals. Check! Pro tip: Ask yourself if you really need that item. Do you need those stiletto heels for a trip to Hawaii? Probably not. I wore my wedges out of stubbornness bc I packed them. Did I need them? NOPE. No one wears heels in Hawaii.

Pack dual-purpose outfits: This is a great space-saving tip. Can you mix and match your outfits? Do you have a washer/dryer at your destination? These questions will help you plan that precious suitcase space and maximize your wardrobe abroad! Pro tip: pack one light and one dark item. One light pair of shoes and one dark means all your bases are covered.
