Must-Have Kitchen Tools

It seems like many Americans found a new love for cooking in 2020. Since the beginning of the pandemic, it felt like every week there was a new recipe trending on Twitter and the country putting together at home. However, while we can all give cooking a try, there are definitely a few items we need that will make the process easier and more efficient. No matter if you’re cooking dinner or baking sweets, here are five staple must-have kitchen tools.

Chef’s Knife – A reliable and sharp chopping knife will make a big difference in the experience you have cooking in the kitchen. Prices vary depending on brands and quality. However, I highly recommend splurging on a reliable knife, as they will last for years and you’re going to be using it almost every time you follow a recipe.

Cookware Set – I prefer a set of nonstick pots and pans but you also have the option to go with ones that have a stainless steel surface. Keep in mind when you’re making a decision that pans with a nonstick coating will require nylon or wooden utensils, as metal ones will scratch the surface.  With a 10-12 inch skillet, saucepan and stock pot, you’ll be ready to conquer any meal that comes your way.

Cutting Boards – Yes, this is plural because having only one cutting board will make cooking impossible. Unless you like to constantly be washing your cutting board, I recommend getting 2-3. I like to have cutting boards that I will only use for certain types of foods that way I don’t cut vegetables on a cutting board that I also use for cutting chicken. For produce, I also like to have wooden boards and for raw meats I prefer to use a plastic one I can toss in the dishwasher to thoroughly clean.

Kitchen Shears – Every time you prep a meal, you’ll be opening a package or needing to cut stems of herbs and veggies. That’s why having a reliable pair of kitchen shears will be life-saving and a great tool to have around.

Utensil Set – Last, but not least, is a utensil set. Before buying a set, make sure they’re a match for the type of cookware set you have. As I mentioned before, you’ll want silicone or wooden ones for nonstick pans and metal ones for stainless steel cookware. A common utensil set will come with a slotted spoon, regular spoon, spatula, ladle and whisk.
