Moving 101

Let’s be honest – nobody likes to move. The thought of having to pack up everything in sight, unpack it in 24-36 hours and then figure out where everything will go in the new house is exhausting. My husband and I just went through it and I am happy to say, we are officially unpacked and finally get to relax for a bit. After weeks of stressing out about purchasing a home, our big moving day was long, hot and tiring. Despite hiring a moving company to do the heavy lifting, there’s still plenty of items on the to do list that only you can handle. So, when that big day comes and you’re getting overwhelmed from everything that needs to get accomplished, consider the following tips.

Eat a healthy (and filling) breakfast

I know eating is a no-brainer but believe me when I say that having breakfast that will keep you moving for hours is important. Moving day will take every little bit of energy out of you so starting it off on a good note will make this big day run smoother. Also, don’t forget to hydrate. Adding a splash of lemon or tossing in a few berries in your water bottle will add a splash of flavor and help you get through the last bit of the day.

Start early

The sooner you get your day started, the better it will go. Living in Florida has taught me that if for whatever reason you have to be outside, the early hours of the day will be your best friend. On moving day, we were up at 7 am and driving over our cars with racks of clothes by 8. As the hours creep closer to noon and 2 o’clock, your body will start shutting down as it tries to bear with the heat, so avoid the snooze button and get up.

Tackle one room at a time

Once the movers have placed the boxes in each room you’d like them to be in and you’ve gathered a little bit of strength and energy to keep it going on moving day, don’t rush to unpack every room all at once. My best advice is to go from room to room and don’t move onto the next until that space has been unpacked. Not only will it keep you sane and avoid getting frazzled, but you’ll also feel more organized and satisfied to see an entire room unpacked and feeling more like home.

Give yourself a pat on the back

At the end of the day, you’ll look back and be thrilled to have moving day checked off. After the movers were gone and most of the boxes were settled in each room, we popped a bottle (or two) and celebrated this milestone we had achieved together. It’s not easy buying a home nor is it to move and start fresh somewhere else, but once it’s done, you’ll feel so much better and truly accomplished.
