Life Lessons from Kauai

Last week was a little different for me. First off, I’ve never taken a long plane flight by myself. And I must say, GO Marisa! (And thank you Netflix.) After watching all three of the Jurassic Park movies, I found myself landing on the beautiful island of Kauai (yes, the movies were partially filmed there.) Also known as, The Garden Island. And I proceeded to spend the following week hiking through the jungle, zip lining over trees, kayaking through rivers, and climbing all over the mountain. It’s not all about the Poké, Açaí bowls and Piña Coladas on the beach when you visit Kauai. Though, I had plenty of all that, as well.

No matter how much you train, there will be some pains.

Yes, I trained for this. I’ve been challenging myself on the stair master, riding my bike and running through the park in order to prepare for the numerous hikes on the island. I quickly learned, I couldn’t truly train for climbing down a mountain when I live in the flattest state.
Oh boy, did my legs burn.

A natural alarm clock is extremely effective.

There are chickens and roosters all over the island. Every day I’d wake up to cock-a-doodle-doo-ing from the local crowd that hung around the resort. Since there are no natural predators on the island, these birds are living their best life.

Nature is nurture for your soul.

Studies show that being in nature is great for your overall health and happiness. After my trip, I feel like living proof. Whenever I travel, I seem to come down with a cold. Whether it’s from the plane, my fellow travelers or the food, I’ll never know. But being out in a tropical jungle for 4 or 5 days had me feeling healthy and strong.
