How To Start a Book Club

Last month marked the inception of a literary adventure that I’ve longed for: my very first book club! I have always desired to be a part of one, but previous attempts at joining or forming one seemed to be thwarted by fate. However, the tides turned, and I am thrilled to announce the success of my book club endeavor!

The significance of book clubs is immeasurable. Growing up, I observed many moms who were entrenched in these literary circles, eagerly anticipating their monthly gatherings. Hoping to recreate a similar sense of community, I decided to extend the invitation to my friends.

Having recently relocated to Charlotte, I found myself surrounded by a vibrant group of new friends. Expanding the social circle, I reached out to the friends of my friends and even friends of friends of friends. With a shared enthusiasm for connecting, I orchestrated a voting session to select our October read, opting for a spine-tingling thriller given the Halloween spirit.

Our inaugural meeting on Halloween took the form of a delightful potluck. The room buzzed with energy as we delved into discussions about the chosen book. It was a joy to hear diverse perspectives, favorite characters, and insights that enriched the overall experience. To add an extra layer of excitement, I curated some thought-provoking book club questions, such as, “Which character would you most want to go to dinner with?”

Embarking on the journey of starting a book club may appear daunting initially, but in reality, all it takes is one other person with a shared passion. From there, the ripple effect takes over, with each member inviting someone new into the fold. Before you know it, you’ve woven a tapestry of connections with a network of individuals who share your love for literature.

Connecting and bonding over books serves as an exceptional icebreaker, facilitating the swift formation of friendships. And let’s not forget the added perk of indulging in your friends culinary creations during meetings—an enticing incentive to stay committed to our reading goals! So, if you’ve been contemplating diving into the world of book clubs, take that leap. You might just find yourself immersed in a captivating community that not only broadens your literary horizons but also forges lasting connections. Happy reading!
