How to Prepare for Your First Cat, From a New Cat Mother

As I have begun navigating post-grad life, I have learned multiple lessons on responsibility. My favorite responsibility as an adult is taking care of my poster child of a cat, Porkchop. After 9 months of being a mother to this beautiful grey tabby cat, I have narrowed down the best ways to prepare for owning your first cat. I hope this advice can help new owners as well as non-cat owners who want to adopt a cat.

Before bringing a new furry friend into your home there are several things you should consider to ensure that you and your new cat have a happy and healthy life together.

First, you’ll need to decide whether you want to adopt a kitten or an adult cat. Kittens are adorable and playful, but they require a lot of attention and training. If you have the time to devote to a young cat, then a kitten may be the perfect choice for you. However, if you have a busy schedule or prefer a more laid-back companion, an adult cat may be a better fit.

You’ll also need to think about the logistics of cat ownership. This includes things like cat-proofing your home, purchasing necessary supplies, and scheduling regular vet check-ups. Make sure that you have a designated space for your cat to sleep, eat, and use the litter box. Cats also need plenty of toys and scratching posts to keep them entertained. My cat’s favorite toy is the laser pointer.

When it comes to choosing a specific cat to adopt, there are several factors to consider. Consider your lifestyle and what type of cat would fit in best. For example, if you live in a small apartment, a more sedentary breed may be a better choice. If you have children, a cat with a calm and friendly temperament may be ideal. Consider visiting your local animal shelter to find a cat that matches your preferences. But honestly, most of the time, cats come from the Universal Cat Distribution cycle which means the cat just randomly shows up at your door one day and you are now its mother.

Once you have found your new best friend, be patient and give them time to adjust to their new home. Cats are creatures of habit, so it may take some time for them to feel comfortable in their new surroundings. Make sure to provide plenty of love, attention, and positive reinforcement as they settle in.

Owning a cat is a wonderful experience that brings joy and companionship into your life. By taking the time to carefully consider the logistics of cat ownership and choosing the right cat for your lifestyle, you can ensure that you and your new furry friend have a happy and healthy life together.
