Over the past couple weeks, social media has been flooded with posts from companies showing support for the BLM movement. While intentions seem genuine, the jury’s still out on whether or not their words will lead to action that make actual change. Brands such as YouTube, Disney, Amazon and Netflix are among the many that have spoken out and as noted in this article by AdAge, which also includes a regularly updated list of responses from brands, media companies and agencies as they take a stand on racism and social injustice, their messages are drawing a mix of praise and criticism. The brands and agencies that include with their statements actions they plan to take to combat racism are generally faring well. Other brands are being accused of commercializing the tragedy.
We’ve seen this cycle replay time and time again within the last several decades – a senseless killing of a black person leads to an immediate outcry for change but ends up losing steam and is eventually forgotten by the public. Enough is enough. It’s time for long-term change and following a slew of statements from companies promising to do their part, all eyes are on corporate America.
At Fish, we’ve seen firsthand brands that are taking action, like our client Fleet Feet. The company has publicly committed to the fight against social injustice and is making movement toward change, including:
- A new partnership with Black Girls Run, an organization focused on reducing obesity rates in Black women through running and other healthy habits
- Supporting the Civil Rights Race Series’ virtual running event 1 Million Miles for Justice, which encourages runners, walkers, and cyclists to pledge the completion of 25 miles between June 15 and July 15 to help fight against injustices in the Black community
- Adding Diversity and Inclusion as a strategic brand pillar and creating the Fleet Feet Diversity Alliance, which is open to any member of Fleet Feet who wants to be part of the change toward a more diverse future
- Hosting a YouTube LIVE panel discussion on systemic racism and running with athletes and leaders in the running industry
We’re so proud to partner with companies like Fleet Feet and look forward to working together to continue the momentum and make an impact. For more information on actions we’ve taken as a group at Fish and individually, click here.
