To say the last couple of weeks have been beyond busy is an understatement. While things have been moving and grooving at Fish, it seemed like I could barely keep afloat outside of work. Earlier this summer, my husband and I decided to take the next big step in life and start looking to buy a home in Fort Lauderdale. Being in PR and constantly reading up on the latest news and insights, I did my homework and researched what this process would be like. However, nowhere online did it say that 24 hours in a day would not be enough for us to keep our lives moving as usual AND keep up with the amount of paperwork and questions we had to fill out. Fortunately for us, we have officially signed on the dotted line (or lines I should say) and are now homeowners! While it may seem like we can finally take a deep breath and relax, that’s not the case. Post-closing is a whole other ordeal, so thought I’d share a few tips and tricks on how to make the days following the closing a little easier on yourself for when that big day comes around.
Make a list
I am a huge proponent of making lists! Not only do I feel organized and like I have a grasp on what needs to get done but I also get a great feeling checking things off. Creating a rundown of what you need to accomplish in the days following the closing will be lifesaving, as there’s more to do than you originally imagined.
Divvy up the responsibilities
Once that list has been created, go through each bullet point and decide who should tackle what. Remember, you’re not alone in this process and asking for someone else to handle calling the cable company to request a change of address is completely acceptable. Be sure that other person helping you out writes their to dos – so there’s no mix up.
Change your address with USPS
One of the first places you’ll want to file a change of address is with the U.S. Post Office. Luckily for you, now you can go through the process by following a few steps online. There is a $1 charge, but that’ll save you from having to add another stop to your morning commute.
Get a new door lock
This seems like a no brainer but when you have a less than a week to move in after you closed on your new home, it may slip your mine to change the lock to your front door. You’ll want to do this primarily for your safety. Keep in mind that if the community you live in has an HOA, you’ll most likely have to provide a copy of the new key to them as well.
Start requesting quotes ASAP
Whether you’re getting a moving company to do all the heavy lifting or inviting your strongest friends to give you a hand with moving the furniture, you’ll want to start requesting quotes (from moving companies or rental trucks) right away. Keep in mind – especially if you live in a big city – that you’re not the only one making a move and many times, people will book these weeks in advance.
I could keep going on and on about what’s to come after purchasing a home but figured these are the top line items that will get you started. Stay tuned for more! Our big moving day is in just two days and I’m sure I’ll have some pointers for that as well.
