As a national agency that specializes in franchising, we naturally work with a lot of food service concepts. While our clients cover a wide-range of segments within the expansive food industry, there’s one thing they have in common: they all have insanely delicious products. At Fish, the only thing we love more than watching true crime documentaries on Netflix is eating, so we’re always happy to get out of the office and take a trip to visit some of our amazing clients (and sample some of their amazing menu items).
Recently, I hit the road with my fellow team members, Claibourne and Chelsea, to visit our client Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. With more than 300 locations across the country, we had to take advantage of being just a quick road trip away from the company’s Orlando location. However, this trip was more than just a chance to dive into the brand’s famous steakburgers and other signature menu offerings that have developed a passionate following from consumers nationwide for their “taste that takes you back.” We were given the full Freddy’s experience, and got to walk through a condensed version of the restaurant training that franchisees and employees receive when they join the company.
Freddy’s is known as much for its great food as it is for its great people, so it wasn’t any surprise that Josh, the Orlando district manager who walked us through the entire process, was enthusiastic, passionate and excited to have us there. First, we were given a run-down of the brand’s unique history. For those who aren’t as familiar as we are, Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers was co-founded in 2001 by brothers Bill and Randy Simon, along with longtime friend and business partner Scott Redler. The restaurant was named after Bill and Randy’s father and decorated World War II veteran Freddy Simon, whose family values and tradition of service are the company’s foundation. The first Freddy’s location opened in 2002 in Wichita, Kansas, which offered customers a unique combination of cooked-to-order steakburgers, Chicago dogs and other savory items along with its signature desserts prepared with premium frozen custard churned fresh throughout the day. To this day, Freddy’s continues to serve a menu reminiscent of the all-American meals Freddy Simon prepared for his family over the last several decades.
After getting a quick refresh of the company background, Josh walked us through the restaurant kitchen and taught us everything we needed to know about the preparation that goes into Freddy’s menu items. Best of all, we each received a lesson in how to craft, cook and flip the brand’s signature steakburgers (which trust us, are nothing like any burger you’ve tasted at a quick-service restaurant before). While Chelsea and I weren’t exactly star students at burger-flipping, Clay was a natural! We were rewarded with a sampling of Freddy’s best menu items for all of our hard work, and needless to say we were not disappointed. After stuffing our faces with the brand’s signature premium steakburgers, crispy shoestring fries, fried cheese curds, onion rings, sandwiches and of course famous frozen custard for dessert, it was time for us to hit the road and head home to sunny South Florida.
Shout out to our top-notch clients at Freddy’s for setting up this opportunity for us. We loved having the opportunity to get a first-hand experience into all of the things that make this brand so special (and of course, for the opportunity to indulge with Freddy’s delicious food).
