The pop culture phenomenon that is the San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone once again, gifting us with some epic trailers and exciting revelations about what’s in store for a slew of TV shows, movies and more. While a comic-book convention may have once been the definition of uncool, nerd culture has officially gone mainstream over the past decade. It isn’t just comic book fans who know about the Guardians of the Galaxy now, and it’s not just geeks who know about the Dark Knight. Liking comic books or superheroes has become like having a favorite band, and comic conventions are like concerts. While there are many different comic conventions, the San Diego Comic-Con is now a necessary step for major studios looking to show off their biggest-budget projects and get consumers excited for what’s to come.
If you’re not a major nerd like me, have no fear. I’ve compiled the most exciting announcements to come out of this year’s convention in one spot. Let the anticipation and hype begin.
Marvel
Endgame marked the completion of the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it was a doozy. With many of our beloved Avengers either dead or retired, the future was unclear on what direction the MCU was headed in next. During Comic-Con, Marvel gave us a sneak peek into the new phase four and what to expect. From announcing Angelina Jolie will be joining the MCU in upcoming film The Eternals to revealing that the next film released will be a Black Widow sequel, the panel was insanely exciting for Marvel fans like me. Westworld
Westworld is one of those shows that makes zero sense to me if I think about it too hard, but I love it anyway. A new trailer debuted at Comic-Con, revealing that the third season embarks in the wake of the last android-host rebellion/jailbreak from the Wild West park and into the outside world. In neo-Los Angeles, we meet new cast member Aaron Paul’s Caleb, a construction worker who pals around with a lo-fi, bleep-bloop robot named George. A blue-collar dude with a complicated past, he soon finds himself in dramatic confrontation with the misanthropic runaway, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood).
Watchmen
I’m a big fan of this film, so I could not be more excited for HBO to retell the story of Watchmen in an upcoming TV series. During Comic-Con International in San Diego, HBO finally released a full-length trailer for its highly-anticipated Watchmen television series. Before this, the series’ marketing videos were brief and cryptic, and they only led to more questions. However, the Comic-Con trailer not only gives us some answers, it promises a dark, dense and thoughtful trip back into the gritty universe of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ original comic series.
Snowpiercer
Daveed Diggs, breakout star from the Broadway musical Hamilton, is starring in this upcoming new TBS series. I’ll admit I know little to nothing about it, but Diggs is insanely talented, so there’s no doubt this is going to be worth a watch.
His Dark Materials
Another upcoming series starring a Hamilton cast member – this time, Lin-Manuel Miranda himself. HBO and BBC teamed up to create a new series based on the acclaimed book series His Dark Materials. You can check out the trailer for yourself at this link.
The Witcher
If you’re looking for something to fill the Game of Thrones-shaped hole in your heart, this might do the trick. The Witcher is based on a series of fantasy novels written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The books follow the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, a mutant specially bred to hunt monsters in a medieval world. The books were the basis for The Witcher series of video games which popularized the series in America. Netflix revealed the trailer for The Witcher during the convention, and at the end of a panel with the showrunner and its stars, dropped a two minute teaser that’s full of monsters, magic, and blood.
