Every year, scientists conduct a chilling experiment involving 250 brave souls equipped with monitors to gauge their reactions while watching a selection of horror movies. These monitors meticulously track heart rates and other fear-inducing responses, contributing to the official annual ranking revealed by The Tab.
While jump scares and slasher films don’t particularly resonate with me, I find myself drawn to movies that linger in the recesses of the mind, prompting contemplation. Scary movie nights have become a cherished tradition for my family, and the eagerly awaited annual ranking has become a key part of our spooky season.
Traditionally, the rankings exhibit a semblance of consistency from year to year, especially within the top 10-20 slots, featuring familiar titles like The Conjuring, The Ring, and Paranormal Activity. However, this year introduced a new addition to the list — A24’s “Talk To Me,” released just this year. While I haven’t watched it yet, my mom’s review suggests it’s not for the faint of heart, even for someone not easily spooked.
The real intrigue lies in the coveted Top 5, and this year, there were some notable shake-ups.
- The Conjuring: A perennial favorite, the presence of Ed and Lorraine Warren ensures this movie’s consistent placement in the top 5, a fact unsurprising to seasoned horror enthusiasts.
- Insidious: Another fan-favorite, though personally, I find The Conjuring franchise to be more chilling. Nonetheless, Insidious continues to claim its spot among the top 5.
- Skinamarink: Despite widespread criticism of its quality, Skinamarink’s inclusion piqued my interest. It appears the scientists have spoken, lending an air of credibility to this unexpected choice.
- Host: A rogue selection that fits the bill, Host’s brevity doesn’t diminish its harrowing impact. Post-ranking, I couldn’t resist watching to experience the second scariest movie for myself — a decision that proved to be spine-chillingly accurate.
- Sinister: Drumroll, please. The horror movie I’ve been championing for years, Sinister, claims its well-deserved throne as the number 1 movie this year. *self-pat on the back* It’s a triumphant moment for a film that has held a special place in my horror-loving heart, and I’m eager to see if it maintains its dominance in 2024.
