I have zero shame in my nerd game. I love Harry Potter (#Ravenclaw for life), Lord of the Rings, Star Wars… you name it, I’m a fan of it. On the heels of two of the most exhausting years in human history, I desperately need things to look forward to and give me hope that good days lay ahead in 2022. Luckily for me and all my fellow nerds, Marvel has a full pipeline of content to deliver to us over the next year. From highly anticipated movies to Disney+ series, here’s what’s in store for us this year:
Moon Knight (March 30), Disney +
In “Moon Knight,” Oscar Isaac plays Marc Spector, an ex-soldier with a profound case of dissociative identity disorder that manifests as fully distinct individuals. He becomes the conduit for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, which only further exacerbates Marc’s anxiety over his mental illness.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 6), In Theaters
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will mark the first MCU movie to release in 2022 and the fifth installment of Phase 4. Sam Raimi’s sequel is expected to lean more into horror as the movie follows the events of Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision, and Loki. Dr. Stephen Strange casts a forbidden spell that opens the door to the multiverse, including an alternate version of himself, whose threat to humanity is too great for the combined forces of Strange, Wong, and Wanda Maximoff.
Thor Love and Thunder (July 8) In Theaters
Natalie Portman is back as Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder, and she’ll be joined by Chris Hemsworth as the titular thunder god, Russell Crowe as another thunder god, Zeus, and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. Then there’s the Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie. Excited? You should be.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (November 11) In Theaters
Kevin Feige has been clear that Marvel will not recast the role of T’Challa after the death of Chadwick Boseman. What is less clear is what that means for this franchise. Fan expectation is that T’Challa’s sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) would become leader of Wakanda and take on the duty of the Black Panther — but the only creative element of this film that’s been announced so far is its title, which at least makes clear Marvel’s commitment to this franchise.
She-Hulk (TBD) Disney+
Tatiana Maslany will play Jennifer Walters, a lawyer whose field involves superhero-related cases. In the comics, Walters is cousins with Bruce Banner, and a blood transfusion from Banner gives her Hulk-ing abilities. Ginger Gonzaga, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Josh Segarra, and Jameela Jamil co-star. Jessica Gao (“Rick and Morty”) is the head writer, with Kat Coiro (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Anu Valia (“Never Have I Ever”) directing.
Ms Marvel (TBD) Disney+
Marvel’s first Muslim lead character — and one of the newest characters within the Marvel Comics fold — gets her own Disney Plus show, with newcomer Iman Vellani in the title role, also known as 16-year-old Kamala Khan. A major fan of superheroes — especially Captain Marvel — Kamala gains the ability to change her shape and size, allowing her to, among other things, punch with a very, very big fist.
