As part of my 2021 resolution to read five books each month this year, here’s a recap of my reading list for February.
The Good
- His & Hers by Alice Feeney: If you like thrillers, you’ll like this one. It was super dark and twisted, which I’m into, but if you’re easily scared maybe skip it (or at the very least, only read during the day because some of this story is definitely nightmare-inducing).
- This Time Next Year by Sophie Cousens: Much like romantic comedy movies and TV shows, it’s hard to find a romantic comedy book that doesn’t cross into being cheesy or predictable territory. Luckily, this one nailed being charming and not cheesy, as well as featured a female lead character who was ambitious, passionate and not even remotely a damsel in distress. The love story felt authentic and believable, and I totally recommend this one if you’re looking for a book that will leave you with a smile on your face.
- The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo: Prepare yourself to be feeling A LOT of feelings after reading this one. That said, even if I cried a ton of tears when I finished this book (and, to be honest, several times throughout while reading), I still totally recommend. I was SO invested in the characters and the story, and was thinking about this one for awhile after I was done, which is always a sign of a great book.
The Just Okay
- The Lies That Bind by Emily Giffin: This wasn’t necessarily not good, but unfortunately for Emily Giffin, she truly peaked with the Something Borrowed/Something Blue books. I can’t help but compare everything she’s put out since to those two (which are truly the pinnacle of chick lit), and nothing since has compared. I also HATED both of the male love interests in this book, so by the end I didn’t care who she ended up with because neither were worthy of her time.
- My Sister’s Husband by Nicola Marsh: I liked this book, but why it’s falling under the “just okay” category is because it wasn’t marketed correctly. It’s sold as “an absolutely gripping and suspenseful page-turner,” but really it’s more of a family drama type of story and definitely not a suspenseful mystery.
