A Guide to Celebrating Christmas When You Don’t Celebrate Christmas

If you don’t celebrate Christmas, December 25th can easily be one of the most boring days of the year. Everything is closed, Christmas-themed re-runs are flooding every channel, and you’re basically trapped for 24 hours with seemingly nothing to do. But fear not my fellow non-Christmas-celebrating friend, I’ve compiled a handy list of ideas on how you can celebrate Christmas even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, based on my 29 years of experience as a Jewish person.

Go to the Movies
Yes, it’s cliché, but sometimes the most obvious option is the best option. The holiday season tends to be jam-packed with great movie options since many studios release their Oscar-worthy contenders during this time, so you will likely have great selections to choose from outside of corny holiday films. Most movie theaters today offer the opportunity to buy your tickets in advance and select your seats, so you don’t have to worry about beating the crowds. Personally, I will be seeing Little Women this year on Christmas and can’t wait.

Plan a Staycation
Hotels are open 365 days a year and offer great amenities you can entertain yourself with for the day. If you’ve got some spare cash laying around (shout out to holiday bonuses), book a room at a great local hotel and spend 24 hours exploring the hotel grounds, booking spa treatments, lounging by the pool, and celebrating life instead of Christmas.

Netflix & Chill
While cable is typically a snooze fest on Christmas, the beauty of countless streaming services is that we have endless entertainment options available at our finger tips. Use Christmas Day to binge watch an entire season of a great new show, no one can judge you.

Volunteer
The holidays are supposed to be about giving back to those in need, so take advantage of your day off by doing just that and volunteering at a local non-profit organization.
