Happy New Year: It’s time to start “over”

The beauty of a new year means having a clean slate and renewed motivation! For me, this rings true for all things home related. I love finding new ways to get organized and keep my downtown loft sparkly clean. Over the Fish-Mas break, I binged watched the Netflix series “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.” The show uses methods published in her bestselling book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing,” and after watched all eight episodes on Netflix, I’m ready to read the book, as well. Here’s a few tidbits of practical advice on organization that I learned:

  • Does it Spark Joy? Review each item and ask yourself how it makes you feel. If it brings you joy, obvs keep it. If not, it’s time to move on.
  • Tidy in order. Based on the KonMari methods, declutter in the following order: Clothes, books, documents, miscellaneous items, mementos.
  • Be grateful for what you have. It’s easy to focus on getting rid of what you don’t want but don’t forget to be grateful for your possessions — even the ones you don’t want. Kondo encourages her clients to say “thank you!” to your item before discarding it. Sounds silly, but I totally agree with her!
