Your [Official] Guide to Surviving the Holidays

Last week, we kicked off the Thanksgiving festivities with our inaugural Fish Feast, diverting from the traditional ‘Baconsgiving’ we typically host. From beef empanadas, sweet potato casserole, and roasted brussel sprouts to pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, apple brie stuffing, and herb and cheese monkey bread, there was no shortage of delicious food and even tastier beverages on hand to kick start the holiday season.

The holidays are one of the most wonderful times of the year…or anxiety-riddled, depending on who you ask. Me, personally, they’re a combination of both. While I am 110 percent pumped for all things Christmas, including matching pajamas, Elf on repeat, Griswald-style decorations throughout the house and massive amounts of Coquito; it’s not lost on me that the holidays can bring out the absolute best and worst of family members.

If your family is anything like mine, we put the FUN in dysfunctional, and Christmas time is when we really shine.

Here are some of my personal tips for surviving the holiday’s this year:

  • Bring an inappropriate game! Nothin’ like a couple rounds of Cards Against Humanity with Grandma and Uncle Fred to liven the crowd.
  • Holidays are NOT the time to work out your issues with certain family members – especially if you are drinking. Go in there with low expectations, that way you won’t be disappointed.
  • Don’t torment yourself and bring home a new boyfriend or girlfriend during the holidays if you don’t want your parents to pepper your significant other with questions like “where do you see yourself in 5 years?” or something ridiculous like “what are your intentions with my daughter?” Save the introductions for post holidays or practice your ‘wooooooosa.’ Trust me, lesson learned.
  • The obvious, steer clear of any and all political talk. Avoid words such as “the wall”, “fake news”, “Mueller”…you get the point.
