Jumping into a new year is tough stuff. Luckily, we can consistently count on one important and awesome tradition to look forward to: Girl Scout cookies. You heard right, it’s Girl Scout cookie season! Typically starting in January and ending in April, the Girl Scouts of the USA put on their vests, set up their tables and and sell, sell, sell!
I remember being a Girl Scout, going from door to door to sell cookies. I learned valuable life lessons such as, leadership skills and not taking ‘no’ for an answer. I mean, honestly, who would say no to Girl Scout cookies? There’s a cookie for everyone and a history behind each delicious dessert. Would you like to take a guess at the top selling cookie that brings in at least 25% of annual sales? I’ll give you a hint: there’s chocolate involved. Thin Mints. In case you’re not aware of what a Thin Mint is (first, please go buy a box and rectify your mistake), it’s a thin, mint-flavored chocolate wafer that’s dipped in a chocolate coating. Thin Mints are the ultimate versatile cookies. You can freeze them to enjoy as a cool snack, smash them up to use as an ice cream topping, or eat it right of the box. Win-win-win.
As I’m sitting at my desk, eating my last Samoa (my favorite of the batch and the 2nd best seller), I was wondering how long this tradition has carried on. Girl Scouts of the USA have been selling cookies as a troop fundraiser since 1917. That means we’re celebrating our 101st year of cookies! Wahoo!! And just in case you needed another reason to support your local Girl Scouts for their annual fundraiser, know that every cent of the money raised remains with the chapter of the girls who earned it. Girl power! The Girl Scouts use their earning to participate in incredible experience throughout the year. My troop used to go camping and once, we had a huge slumber party at the Museum of Discovery and Science. To find Girl Scouts selling cookies near you, visit www.girlscoutcookies.org.
