Tips to Mastering your Inbox

By now, we all know I’m an organization freak. There’s a certain sense of calm I feel from having each and every email labeled, filtered or color-coded. Below I’ll let you see a few secrets of mine on keeping my inbox maintained.

Labels and folders. Meet my two best friends, labels and folders. Labels allow you to tag an email and leave the message in your inbox. Folders will move (or archive) the email to that specific folder. These are great tools for keeping your clients organized. Especially since you may add subfolders to any folder!

Archive. That little word I mentioned earlier is kind of a BIG deal to keeping your inbox organized. Archiving is a great way to hide those pesky emails from cluttering your inbox, without actually deleting them. When you archive an email, it’s still available to be pulled up using the search feature. Or it may be found in your folder, if you added a label.

Subscriptions. Cancel the ones you don’t need. Seriously, Gmail could not have made this any easier for you. You don’t have to search the email for the “unsubscribe” button that is so well hidden now-a-days. You have options! Gmail has added an Unsubscribe link at the beginning of those pesky emails. Or hit the ‘Report Spam’ button and you’re given the option to unsubscribe.

Filters. You may want to keep some subscriptions handy. Yet actually seeing them  in your inbox every day is still kind of annoying. For me, I need to ensure I’m getting my discounts to Wine.com, Edible Arrangements, and 1800Flowers. These discounts come in handy for client gifts. For these emails, I’ve created filters and they magically file themselves away in the designated folder. Skip that inbox (archive it)!

My personal favorite… STARS! Gmail has it’s own method for us color coding connoisseurs built into it’s inbox. A couple of my meanings… Orange arrows; follow up needed. Blue star; to do later. Ok, that’s enough. 🙂
