90 Days in the Fish Tank

Who runs the world? MILLENNIALS! But really, it’s official. More than one third of American workers are Millennials (adults ages 18 to 34 in 2015), and we’ve now surpassed Generation X to become the largest share of the American workforce, according to recent studies.

Earlier this year, I joined the Fish squad as the team’s newest account executive (and fellow Millennial), and in honor of my 90-day Fish anniversary, I thought I’d share what I’ve learned about my new job so far, the value of loving where you work, and some other fun Fish facts.

“Fran-Dev “– What’s That?

Here at Fish, a huge portion of our work is dedicated to franchise development, AKA fran-dev. When I first started at the firm, I had no idea what a HUGE impact franchising had on the U.S. economy. Three months in, and I’m still wildly impressed with these numbers recently announced by the International Franchise Association (IFA):

  • The gross domestic product (GDP) of the franchise sector is projected to rise 5.6 percent this year to $552 billion, adding $29 billion in GDP to the U.S. economy.
  • The franchise sector will contribute approximately 3 percent of U.S. GDP in nominal dollars.

As a leading franchise development PR firm in the industry, we are the experts in marketing franchisors to prospective entrepreneurs looking to join a franchise system. Its exciting to know that there are thousands of successful franchised businesses across the country, and we rep several of them here at Fish. Its also exciting to know that franchising is making a huge impact on our country’s economy.

“Award-Winning Workplace” – More than just a PR Buzzword

According to this recent USA Today article, 25- to 35-year-olds said they’d be willing to give up an average of $7,600 in pay for a better situation at the office, such as more career development and a healthier work/life balance. While that is obviously a big chunk of change, my point is this: Us millennials place serious value on career development and a work/life balance.

With that said, over the past few years, Fish Consulting was named a “Best Place to Work” by PRWeek and the South Florida Business Journal, both highly respected publications. In addition to our office perks (like free snacks and weekly office happy hours), it’s nice to know that I can talk to my supervisor during our weekly one-on-one check in meetings about client-related items and my career path.

The fact that everyone in our office is almost always smiling and in a good mood also speaks volumes, and as a newly hired employee, these industry awards are meaningful.

Book Nerds – Just Like Me!

Drum role, please. Introducing one of my favorite parts of joining the Fish team: The Book club! If you know me, you know that I’m an avid reader and likely have 5-50 book recommendations handy at any time. It’s nice to know I’ve found fellow book nerds just like me, and I’m so excited about our recently created book club.

I hope you’ll follow me on my career journey here at Fish Consulting. Stay tuned for my next post for more insight, best practices and other random thoughts, courtesy of yours truly.
