7 tips for getting media to cover your grand opening

Having worked with franchises around the country, we understand the importance of making sure a franchisee’s grand opening is a hit. But the opening is one of the busiest times for a business owner, which is why Fish excels at taking some of the heavy lifting off their plate.

We’ve developed a turnkey grand opening process to drive extensive local media coverage for franchisees. From the development of all necessary press materials to facilitating media interviews, Fish does what it takes to help ensure each grand opening is a success.

If you’re handling your own grand opening PR, here are some tips for getting the most out of your media outreach:

  1. Write a press release – Make sure it has all the essential information about your grand opening. Some people may not know how to write a press release, but with information like where and when your event is happening, what promotions you’ll offer, and any special guests, this will be enough to email to reporters.
  2. Write a media pitch – A pitch is a compelling note to pique reporters’ interest in covering your grand opening. Make sure it’s short, sweet, and informative – as reporters are strapped for time and won’t read a long email. You can paste the press release after your signature for more details.
  3. Build a media list – These are members of the local media you want to share your news with. For a restaurant opening, you’ll want to include any reporters that review restaurants in your community or write about new businesses. Include reporters from local newspapers, magazines, websites, blogs, and TV and radio stations.
  4. Give reporters a few weeks’ notice – Newsrooms are shrinking and reporters have less time than ever to churn out an increasing number of stories. Get on their radar 3-4 weeks in advance, but don’t forget to follow up a few days before as schedules tend to shift depending on the news cycle.
  5. Consider partnering with a charity – It’s important for local businesses to get involved in their community, so consider starting off on the right foot and using your grand opening as a way to raise money for an organization you, and your employees, believe in.
  6. Invite social media influencers to your opening – Or you can offer up a “first look” if you’re able to invite a few in before your doors officially open to the public. (Check out our article on QSRmagazine.com about engaging social media influencers.)
  7. Plan a local brand activation or PR stunt – While these take significantly more creativity and coordination, they tend to generate a lot of attention from local media and potential customers. Check out Andie’s recent blog on pulling off a creative PR stunt.
