We’re only two full months into 2019, but doesn’t it feel like the year started months ago? From the moment we kicked off the New Year, many of us have not had a moment to kick back and from the look of our calendars, it doesn’t seem like it’ll be slowing down any time soon. With busy schedules, travel arrangements and juggling client work, a few tips and tricks could go a long way for all of us on the struggle bus.
Prioritize time management
Don’t try to finish 10 things at a time because in the end, none of it will be completed, as you’d like. According to Thrive Global, it’s best to create a list of the top 3-5 items that you must accomplish that day. Then, get to work. You’ll notice that when you try to juggle too many things at the same time, the results won’t reflect your best work and many of the tasks won’t even get checked off.
Be real with yourself
Lying to yourself about how long something will take to complete isn’t in your best interest. Many of us have done it – including myself! When I know I have several top-line items that need to be delivered to clients throughout the week, I set realistic goals and plan ahead to make sure I give myself enough time to complete my work. Planning how long a document will take to complete and taking into consideration all the calls scheduled throughout the week will be life saving.
Block the distractions
At Fish, we have booths upstairs that we can escape to when we really need to buckle down and focus. If your office doesn’t have a space you can go to for no distractions, try putting your Skype chat on Do Not Disturb and turning off notifications for texts. I also recommend putting on your headphones so your peers know you’re busy and get the hint that you don’t have time to chat.
Take a break and recharge
A 5-10 minute walk will go a long way when you’ve been cooped up in the office all day. Walk to your car and back or go around the block to get your favorite coffee. The fresh air and vitamin D will clear your mind and give you a break from starring at the computer screen. Another bonus to going outside is you’ll get a few steps in for the day. Sitting for extended time can be harmful to your physical and mental health.
