Digital Marketing 101: Social Media Jargon

When working closely with social media marketers and strategists, there’s probably been more than one occasion where you’ve felt lost when you hear all kinds of crazy terms like “Metadata” and “Algorithms”.

Digital marketing tends to have a lot of jargon, which causes those who aren’t “in the know” confusion, but have no fear, there’s no need to carry around a dictionary! Especially if you leave your companies’ digital marketing to a professional marketing team, like the services this Los Angeles Digital Marketing Agency can offer for example. If your marketing agency uses any jargon when communicating with you, simply ask them to lay it out in layman terms!…

Otherwise, here are a few terms to familiarize yourself with when comprehending social media jargon:

  • Algorithm: Each social media platform has it’s own algorithm (Instagram most recently rolled out their own algorithm) that mathematically determines the relevancy and visibility of where content gets placed.
For example: Your Facebook newsfeed doesn’t necessarily show you every piece of content (status, photos, etc.) from your friends list; instead, your news feed is filled with content curated by the algorithm which can based off your Facebook activity (among other mathematical things that us social media peeps find interesting.) Algorithms play a major role in your brands placement online!
  • Click through rate (CTR): Clicks รท impressions = CTR.
CTRs are a social media metric used to calculate the percentage of users exposed to your content versus those who actually performed the action required e.g. clicking your social media ad, or a link in your email.
  • Conversion rate: The percentage of users who perform a positive action on your website (from social media), therefore “converting” into a customer.
Based on your goals, a conversion could be obtaining email addresses for your newsletter, app downloads, webinar sign-ups, etc. Measuring the conversion rates of your social media marketing efforts is a must and should play an important role in determining your social media budgets.
  • Engagement: What’s at the core of social media? Interacting with your followers, of course! That’s where engagement comes in; it’s defined as interacting with others on social media. Dependent on the social media platform, this could be Likes, Comments, Shares, Favorites, Retweets, etc. Businesses of all sorts are always looking for ways in which to boost their engagement and reach and so even industries that you might not expect are searching for effective strategies too – these pest control marketing ideas are an example of this.
  • Engagement rate: Percentage of users who actively engaged (interacted) with your content.
The engagement rate is an important metric as it can indicate how successful (or unsuccessful) your content was to your audience.
  • Impressions: The number of times your content is displayed.
  • Metadata: HTML tags that determine what information auto populates for content when you share on certain social media networks.
  • Organic reach: The number of users who viewed your content without paid advertising.
Facebook was the first social media platform to surpass 1 Billion registered users! With tons of eyeballs browsing online at any given time, it’s tough to have your content organically do well AND get in front of your target audience. Social media is ever evolving and your content should have two different strategies for both organic and paid social media.
  • Paid reach: The number of users who viewed your content with paid advertising.
Effective social media is about being relevant and getting in front of your target audience and the right time. Why miss the opportunity of paid social media to assure your content is in front of users who actually find it relevant? With paid social media you have hyper-targeted options that are only available when you pay to play!
