Simple Ways to Live Sustainably

Many people believe that to live sustainably, you have to make a lot of compromises to luxuries in your way of living. I used to think that too, but I’m here to tell you that’s not always the case!

Environmental sustainability doesn’t mean living without any luxuries, but instead being aware of your resources and reducing unnecessary waste when possible. I used to think that living sustainably was a big commitment, but as I’ve become more committed to helping our beautiful earth, I’ve also learned that there are many easy things you can incorporate in your daily routines that won’t make a big difference to your lifestyle, but can make a big differences to the environment.   1. Turn off lights and unplug devices that you’re not using.

 

Many electronic devices continue to consume electricity even when they’re turned off, so just unplug them when you’re done using it! Also, checking to turn off all your lights before leaving your home doesn’t only help live sustainably, but it saves you some $$ on your electric bill. So why not? If you find though that your electric bill doesn’t go down, and yet you are turning all your lights off and are unplugging all devices, then it might be time to switch providers.   1. Cut out plastic.

Plastic is one of the ocean’s biggest problems. Today billions of pounds of it can be found in swirling convergences making up about 40 percent of the world’s ocean surfaces. Simple ways to cut plastic out of your daily routine is to switch from water bottles to drinking tap water, use paper or medal straws with your drinks, or switch to reusable totes instead of plastic bags when you’re shopping.

  1. Eat locally.

There are so many benefits to this! Not only is this a powerful way to live more sustainably, but local farmer’s markets tend to have more natural and healthy products than what you’ll typically find in a chain supermarket. So you’re usually getting product that’s better for your body.

  1. Use your car less.

Seems like a no brainier, but often times this slips our mind! Reducing your time driving, whether it’s carpooling or taking few trips when running errands, can dramatically help reduce your carbon footprint. Try to walk, bike, or carpool whenever possible!

  1. Use e-tickets when you can.

Today, tickets to movies, games, concerts (and pretty much any other event) use barcodes as tickets that are email to you. Instead of printing your tickets – scan the barcode on your phone!
