Indoor Air Quality Awareness month is here!

If you were to ask me anything about indoor air quality a year ago, I wouldn’t have an answer for you. But ever since I came onboard the Aire Serv team here at Fish Consulting, I’ve learned so much about the importance of your indoor air quality – and WOW does it have a huge effect on our health. With Indoor Air Quality kicking off this October, it’s only appropriate I pass on the knowledge!

There is a common misconception that the air outdoors is worse than the air we breathe inside, but did you know that the pollutants of the air inside are often 2 to 5x more polluted than outdoors?? That shocked me too when I first found out. Especially since Americans spend approximately 90% of their time indoors.

There are several factors that contribute to poor indoor quality such as using chemical cleaning supplies, poor ventilation, hair products, candles, etc. Lucky for us, we can improve our indoor air quality with some easy DIY things such as proper ventilation and filtration! Take a look at a few easy (and house-warming) DIY tips that can help improve your indoor air:

Use soy candles

If you’re a candle lover like me, then this is a great way to improve your air! What many people don’t know is that many of the candles we buy can actually be release carcinogenic toxins. Replacing those with soy wax candles are a non-toxic and chemical-free way to have your home smelling nice. What an easy fix!

Replace fake plants with real ones

Sure, having a fake plant is wayyy less work than maintaining a real one. However, growing flowers and other plants can have a really great impact. Studies have found that indoor plants such as daisies can absorb gases such as carbon dioxide, including a long list of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Get a home purifier

The biggest way to get rid of any nasty pollutants is to ventilate and refresh your home! Getting a home purifier can really help improve your indoor air quality by getting rid of dander, cooking smells, aerosols and polled.
