How to: Keep your desk (or life) clean

Many people struggle with continued cleanliness because put simply: it’ll get messy again, so why bother? Let’s kick that attitude to the curb because you got this! By now, we’ve all seen and fallen in love with the KonMari method of decluttering. The magic of her method is not only in getting clean but staying that way. If you’re planning on decluttering your office desk, it’s important to throw away things that are no longer needed. Don’t be throwing confidential items away, or things that you’re going to need for your next meeting. Some offices like to contact 1300 Rubbish to throw away all of their commercial waste. Offices usually plan to have a big clear out at the end of the year, making sure they have a fresh office space for the year ahead. Perhaps more businesses should consider this. That way, people should keep their desks and the office clean. However, if you’re just cleaning your desk, you need to stay on top of it. Below are my top tips for keeping your space your own, and not your stuff’s.

  1. Decluttering is not a one-time event. If you continue to acquire items, you should continue to declutter your space.
  2. Everything has a place. Always. If all your items have a place and you keep up with putting your things away, your desk, office and home will be a happy one.
  3. Storage is your friend and will also be your enemy (if you let it). Take notice of what items you put into storage. Don’t allow that “box you put in the back of your drawer” or the “bin under you bed” become stale and untouched. Make your storage work for you.
