How to explain PR to your friends and family

Summer is here and that means two things: weddings and graduation season! Typically these events serve as a time to update your friends and family on your life happenings, and nothing is off limits.

While there’s the typical “When are you getting married?” or my personal favorite “How’s living in paradise aka Fort Lauderdale?” most of these questions can easily be answered…until the topic of work comes up, “What do you do?” to which I answer “I work in PR” — that’s where it gets interesting, and the looks on people’s faces clearly change as many people don’t understand PR.

Unlike other professions like being a doctor, surgeon or lawyer, our day-to-day duties as a PR professionals aren’t as easy to define. Here’s are two talking points (yup, I threw in a PR pun) to get you through the next awkward situation 🙂

What do you do exactly?

I’ve learned to keep it simple, here’s my personal go-to: “I’m a media relations specialist and my job is to secure online, print and broadcast coverage for a variety of clients. Recently, my focus has been on foodservice and home service clients.”

Is PR the same as advertising?

Nope! Advertising is paid media and PR is earned media, which is the end result from a business’ PR efforts.
