If you follow along with our blog, then you’re already well aware that television is one of our life passions here at Fish Consulting. We’re so invested that Lorne’s ringtone is ever-changing to reflect the theme song of whichever of his favorite shows just started a new season (current ringtone is Succession, if you’re curious). Needless to say, the Emmy’s are one of our favorite award shows. We love cheering when our favorites win, crying when they lose, and discovering new shows when a total underdog takes home a big award (Fleabag’s sweep this year moved it to the top spot of my must-watch list).
No offense to the academy, but every year there’s at least a few categories they get dead wrong (in my not so humble opinion, at least), and this year was no exception. In case you missed this year’s ceremony or have been living under a rock for the past few weeks, here’s a recap of who won at the 2019 Emmy’s – and who shoulda won for those awards the academy dropped the ball on.
Outstanding Comedy Series
Won: Fleabag
Shoulda Won: Schitt’s Creek. The show just aired it final season and is finally getting long overdue recognition that it’s deserved since season one. It’s comedic gold.
Shoulda Won Runner-Up: The Good Place. One of the smartest comedies on TV today.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Won: Bill Hader
Shoulda Won: Bill Hader. He’s a gift from the universe and must be protected at all costs.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Won: Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Fleabag
Shoulda Won: Catherine O’Hara for Schitt’s Creek. Moira Rose is an icon.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Won: Tony Shalhoub for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Shoulda Won: Tony Hale for Veep. Gary’s unwavering worship complex for Selina is the best part of one of the best shows of our generation.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Won: Alex Borstein for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Shoulda Won: Sarah Goldberg for Barry. Barry is SO GOOD and so is she.
Outstanding Drama Series
Won: Game of Thrones
Shoulda Won: Game of Thrones DESPITE the fact that the show nearly destroyed its impeccable legacy with that disgrace of a final season.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Won: Billy Porter, Pose
Shoulda Won: Billy Porter. I don’t watch Pose but his speech alone made him deserving of this award.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Won: Jodie Comer for Killing Eve
Shoulda Won: Emilia Clarke for Game of Thrones. She was the only redeeming quality of the final season and delivered top-notch Khaleesi acting despite crappy writing.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Won: Peter Dinklage for Game of Thrones
Shoulda Won: Alfie Allen for Game of Thrones. The fact that I was rooting for Theon by the final season after all his terrible behavior in past seasons speaks volumes for the level of activing Allen delivered.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Won: Julia Garner for Ozark
Shoulda Won: Julia Garner for Ozark. Love her, case closed.
