I’ve already started to panic that 2016 is almost over. I know it may seem like I’m hitting the fast-forward button, but summer unofficially ends after Labor Day. September is the kickoff of football season, then comes Halloween and the two weeks of 60-degree weather we experience in South Florida. Then Thanksgiving and Christmas and ahhh – I still don’t have plans for New Year’s Eve!
So, in an effort to not panic and be present in the current moment, I’ve decided to list a few things that are happening in August – the current month. To quote the great Ferris Bueller: Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
Summer Olympics
I love watching the Olympic Games. It’s a time when the world comes together for two weeks to watch the most talented athletes from around the world compete against each other. From August 5 – 21, we cheer for our country, we root for the underdogs and we rejoice when a deserving competitor takes home a medal. At a time when the world seems to shine a dark light on different cultures, beliefs and ethnicities, the 2016 Summer Olympics show that different people with different cultures, beliefs and ethnicities can compete with each other respectfully.
Back to School
August is regarded as the month that kids dread and parents love. It marks the first day of school, which for those of us in Broward County means August 22. I’m clearly no longer in school, and I don’t have kids, but this day affects me, too as I’ll have to leave for work 20 minutes earlier to beat traffic and avoid the two school zones that are along my route.
National S’mores Day
Yes, this is a thing and it’s glorious. Not that I need another reason to enjoy my favorite summertime treat, but National S’mores Day is all the more reason to celebrate. So go ahead – grab some marshmallows, chocolate, graham crackers and a skewer and gather round a fire on August 10 to observe this national holiday.
Happy Birthday, Leos and Virgos
The majority of August is spent celebrating Leo the Lion. This sun sign is creative and generous but can be stubborn and inflexible in their way of thinking. However, if you need someone to get the job done, call on a Leo – they are natural born leaders who can achieve anything they want. August 23 marks the beginning of the Virgo zodiac sign.
