4 Facts About Labor Day

Labor day – the most forgotten about holiday – is on Monday, September 3rd. Giving us a long weekend to say goodbye to the summer (except not really, because we live in Florida). Be honest, have you ever googled why we celebrate Labor Day? Being a slight history nerd, I have. Below are a few funny facts about this fabulous holiday.

“No White After Labor Day” Is OUT.

According to Michael Kors.

Do you know how this fashion trend came to be? That would be: Money (shocker), along with a few other theories. Back in the early 1900s, white clothing symbolized wealth. Though after the Civil War there was “old money” vs. “new money” and the higher class created a system to weed out those who didn’t belong. Then, there’s the undeniable fact that summer is HOT. Therefore, lighter clothes are considered summer, and Labor day marks the end of the summer season.

Canada has “Labour Day”, not to be confused with “May Day”

Which is also celebrated on the first Monday of September. It’s the Canadian holiday that celebrates the achievements of workers. Most other countries (such as Egypt, Brazil, Hong Kong, France and many more) celebrate “May Day” AKA International Workers’ Day. Same celebration, different day – it’s celebrated on May 1 around the globe.

Labor Day Is The Official End Of Hot Dog Season.

Totally serious. It’s recorded on the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council website.

Labor Day Symbolizes The End Of Summer

You heard right, summer if over (again, not exactly for us Floridians). And while that may mean winter is coming, we get to say hello to fall first. We also say hello to the beginning of the NFL season – almost every NFL kick off game has started the weekend after Labor Day. Hello, Fantasy Football! And goodbye three day weekends… until November.
